Sápmi - Saamiland is not a sovereign state but a region which for thousands of
years has been inhabited by the Saami people. Sápmi crosses the borders of five nations.
Sápmi is populated by approximately 85,000 Saami of which 20,000 live in the
Swedish portion. The Saami see themselves as a people with their own culture, language and
way of life. In the Saami world view, man and nature are inseparable. The name
"Sápmi" can be interpreted as "Saami", "people" or
"Samiland".
Since 1986, the Saami have had a common flag and a national song.
