Half Day Guided Tour of Pienza

 

Arrival at 10:00 a.m. in Pienza, noted Tuscan town situated in the southern province of Siena.  It is one of the most important testimony of renaissance architecture, proclaimed by UNESCO to be part of the World Heritage of Humanity for the importance of its monuments and its urbanistic example.

 

The town was planned and built between 1459 and 1462 by Bernardo Gambarelli, nicknamed Rossellino, one of the most famous Florentine architects of his time.  Pope Pius II, born Enea Silvio Piccolomini, was also a great humanistic, who desired that his native town of Corsignano be transformed into a splendid renaissance city which today is Pienza.

 

The itinerary includes a guided tour through the streets of Pienza, the town's cathedral, renaissance monuments and medieval quarters.In addition, one may visit the Diocesan Museum (not included in tour price), located in historic Palazzo Borgia.  It houses the most prestigious collection of paintings on wood in the Sienese province with artists the likes of P. Lorenzetti, il Vecchieta, L. Signorelli, Fra' Bartolomeo, etc.
