It is believed that on the 25th
July 1624 Don Filippo Colonna, grandson of
Marcantonio Colonna, the hero of Lepanto, High
Constable of the Kingdom of Naples, Duke of
Paliano, Feudal Lord Anticoli (now Fiuggi), and
many castle, invited his friends Don Jan of Zurich,
ambassador of Filippo II and ex viceroy of Naples,
along with a group of Knights and Ladies to a wild
boar hunt. The shoot was very fruitful and was
followed by a sumptuous lunch of game. Lunch was
served out in the wild in the hollow of a Chestnut
tree, where making up part of the happy board were
six table companions, confartably seated aroundan
enormous dining table. To commemorate this unusual
event, the trees was named the "Great
Chestnut of the Colonna Princes". According
to historians our Reception now stands on the site
of the Great Chestnut. |
