Darko R. Suvin, born in Zagreb, Yugoslavia, university teacher, literary and theatre critic, poet and writer, studied at the Universities of Zagreb, Bristol (U.K.), the Sorbonne (France), and Yale before getting his Ph.D. in Comparative Literature (drama). Taught at the universities of Zagreb and Massachusetts, from l968 to 1999 at McGill University (full professor of English and Comparative Literature), teaching and writing on theatre (European and Japanese dramaturgy), science and utopian fiction, and cultural theory. He has been visiting professor and visiting fellow at a number of US, European and Japanese universities, vice-president of the International Brecht Society and of the Science Fiction Research Association. He was co-editor and then also publisher of Science-Fiction Studies 1973-81, editor of the International Comparative Literature Association review journal Literary Research/ Recherche littéraire 1986-95, and international board member of various periodicals and publishing series. 

He is Professor Emeritus at McGill University, and a fellow of The Royal Society of Canada (Academy of Humanities and Social Sciences).
