CHRISTIAN CHURCH

The ancient church, like our Cathedral for example, is shaped as a latin cross, it is the symbol of Jesus’ Cross.

What are the most important parts?

The altar where the priest celebrates the Mass

Above the altar often there is a DOME

with frescos.

The COIR is behind the altar.

The FONT contains th eholy water used in Christening.

CONFESSIONAL BOX. People tell the priest about their sins and ask God to forgive them

The AMBONE is near the altar.

It is the place where the people read the Bible or the Gospel and the priest says the sermon.

Next to the Church there is the bell tower, When the bells ring they are the voice of the Church.

What are symbols inside the Church?

The Cross is above the altar: It reminds us that Christ is died on the Cross for our salvation.

Inside the Church on the walls there are 12 pictures

that represent the Calvary and Jesus’ death.

These are pictures taken during Cathechism. They are acting out the Way of the Cross.

The EASTER CANDLE is a big candle next to the altar.

We light it the evening before the Easter.

The FONT with holy water is at the entrance of the Church.

We put the right hand in the font, we make the sign of the cross to purify ourselves.

We light candles in front of pictures of St. Mary, Jesus or other Saints to ask or to thank for their help.

In our church there are many paintings and sculptures like:

DEPOSITION by Antelami.

Pictures on the walls tell us about the life of Jesus, Mary or the Saints.

The statues represent the Madonna and Child, Jesus’ Holy Heart.

In the past paintings were used to inform the people on religious facts and to decorate the church

Frequent symbols are also bread, wine, the lamb, the Good Shepherd, the dove and the fish..

These are example of famous arts of works:

The famous CROSS by Giotto

(XIV sec.). It is in Florence.

The LAST SUPPER by Leonardo (XV sec.)

In Milan.

Another Deposition, “COMPIANTO” by Giotto in Padua.

This is Madonna della seggiola by Raffaello, in Florence.

MODERN CHURCH

Nowdays the church has changed.

It is bare and we think not so beautiful.

THE PRIEST

During the service our Priest wears a white robe.

On the robe he wears different coloured vestment. The colour depends on the time of the year and on the services.
